Interactions Between Biologic Therapies and Other Treatment Modalities.
Abstract: Biologic therapies are becoming increasingly utilized by veterinarians. The literature regarding the interaction of biologic therapies with other therapeutics is still in its infancy. Initial studies have examined the effects of exercise, stress, various pharmaceutical interventions, extracorporeal shockwave, therapeutic laser, and hyperbaric oxygen on biologic therapies. Continued research is imperative as owners and veterinarians increasingly choose a multimodal approach to injury and illness. Further, understanding the effects of concurrently administered treatments and pharmaceuticals as well as the health status of the horse is imperative to providing the optimal therapeutic outcome.

This research article revolves around the growing use of biologic therapies by veterinarians and the requirement of ongoing research to understand the interactions of these therapies with other treatments, considering the fact that a multimodal approach to treating illness and injury is becoming more popular.
Introduction to Biologic Therapies
- Biologic therapies are forms of treatment that use substances derived from living organisms to treat diseases.
- The use of these treatments is expanding in veterinary medicine, as they often provide a more targeted approach to disease management, which can be more effective and result in fewer side effects compared to traditional methods.
An Emerging Field
- The research surrounding the interactions between biologic therapies and other treatment methods is still in its early stages, signifying the novelty of this field.
- This limited research indicates that the combination of different treatment modalities with biologic therapies is relevant, but requires further exploration to establish concrete evidence and guidelines.
The Impact of Different Factors on Biologic Therapies
- Initial studies have delved into evaluating the effects of various factors such as exercise, stress, extracorporeal shockwave, therapeutic laser, and hyperbaric oxygen on biologic therapies.
- The understanding of these areas is essential as every additional treatment or factor could potentially alter the effectiveness of the biologic therapies, or lead to unexpected side effects.
The Importance of Continued Research
- As owners and veterinarians are increasingly opting for a multimodal approach to illness and injury treatment, the knowledge of how biologic therapies interact with other concurrent treatments is critical.
- This understanding is necessary to achieve the best possible result from the treatment regimen and ensure the safety and health of the animals involved.
- This study is an urgent call for more research in this field, to provide veterinarians with the necessary knowledge and tools to securely and effectively use biologic therapies in conjunction with other treatments.
