Interventional Radiology Management of Tracheal and Bronchial Collapse.
Abstract: Chondromalacia of the tracheal and bronchial cartilages and redundancy of the dorsal tracheal membrane result in collapse of the large airways, leading to coughing and airway obstruction. It most commonly affects small-breed dogs, although larger-breed dogs, cats, and miniature horses are also sporadically reported. Dynamic airway imaging is used to confirm the diagnosis. The primary goal of medical management is to control clinical signs attributable to coughing and airway inflammation. When this is no longer effective, tracheal stents provide a minimally invasive, rapid way to restore airway patency. Bronchial stenting is in its infancy in veterinary medicine.

The study discusses the use of interventional radiology, particularly tracheal stents, in treating chondromalacia (a condition causing airway obstruction) in small animals like cats, small dogs, and miniature horses.
Condition and Its Impact
- The research focuses on a medical condition called chondromalacia, which refers to the softening of the cartilages in the tracheal and bronchial tubes.
- The softening, coupled with a surplus of the dorsal tracheal membrane, can cause these large airways to collapse.
- The resultant effect is that the affected animals suffer from coughing and an obstructed airway.
- Most often, it’s small-breed dogs that fall prey to chondromalacia, although the condition is also seen, albeit sporadically, in larger-breed dogs, cats, and even miniature horses.
Diagnostic Measures and Initial Treatment
- Dynamic airway imaging is employed to diagnose chondromalacia definitively.
- The primary objective of medical management in these cases is to control symptoms related to coughing and inflammation in the airway.
Pioneering Treatment Methods
- When primary medical management is insufficient to mitigate symptoms, the paper discusses a novel approach – using tracheal stents.
- Tracheal stents offer a quick, minimally invasive solution to restore patency in the airway, i.e., ensuring the airway stays open.
- The research also briefly mentions bronchial stenting as an emerging technique within veterinary medicine, although it’s not developed much yet.
