Klossiella equi in the kidneys of a horse.
Abstract: The protozoan, Klossiella equi was found in the kidneys of an aged Shetland mare raised in the Fredericton area of New Brunswick. This is the first published report of K. equi in a horse in Canada. The microscopic appearance of the parasite in the kidney is described. A brief discussion of other conditions seen in the horse is also presented.

This research paper presents the first recorded instance of the protozoan Klossiella equi in the kidneys of a horse in Canada, specifically in an old Shetland mare, along with the microscopic features of the parasite.
Introduction
- This study marks the first reported case of Klossiella equi, a type of protozoan, in the kidneys of a horse in Canada, a country where this condition has not been previously reported.
- The infected horse in focus is of the Shetland breed, which are generally small, hardy ponies.
Methodology and Findings
- The discovery was made in the Fredericton area of New Brunswick, suggesting that geographical factors might be involved in the contraction and spread of the protozoan.
- The researchers provide a detailed description of the appearance of Klossiella equi in the horse’s kidneys based on microscopic observation, contributing valuable information to our understanding of this lesser-known condition.
Additional Observations
- Aside from the discovery of Klossiella equi in the horse’s kidneys, the researchers also discuss other conditions that were observed in the horse. While these conditions are not specified in the abstract, they could also have potential implications on the overall health of the horse and may provide insight into the presence of the protozoan.
Significance
- This study is crucial in raising awareness around the presence of Klossiella equi in horses in Canada, heralding potentially new risk factors or disease patterns.
- The description of the parasite’s microscopic appearance in the kidney can serve as a resource for other veterinary professionals in recognizing and diagnosing this condition.
- The findings may also stimulate further investigation into other possible cases or similar conditions in horses in Canada and help in better management and prevention strategies to protect equine health.
