Local utilization of metacresolsulfonic acid combined with streptomycin in the treatment of actinomycosis.
Abstract: The effectiveness of combining metacresolsufonic acid with streptomycin in the treatment of actinomycosis, diagnosed either clinically or in the laboratory, was evaluated in 12 bovines and 2 equines. Eighty-seven percent of treated animals were considered clinically cured and did not show any signs of relapse after a six-month follow-up period. Therapeutic diagnosis by clinical observation was the procedure of choice when it was not possible to obtain laboratory diagnosis.

The study investigated the combined use of metacresolsulfonic acid and streptomycin in treating actinomycosis in cows and horses and found it to be effective in most of the cases with no signs of relapse for up to six months.
Overview of the Study
- The research focused on assessing how effective metacresolsulfonic acid in conjunction with streptomycin, an antibiotic, could be in treating actinomycosis, a bacterial infection, in large Animals like bovines and equines.
- A total of 14 animals (12 bovines and 2 equines), each diagnosed with actinomycosis either through clinical means or laboratory tests, were incorporated in the study.
Results of the Study
- Following the treatment regime, the researchers noted a significant improvement in the condition of the infected animals. Around 87% of the treated animals showed no signs of the disease thereafter and were therefore considered as clinically cured.
- Interestingly, these animals didn’t depict any signs of relapse even after a period of six months post-treatment.
Implications of the Findings
- The high cure rate underscores the potential effectiveness and efficacy of the combination therapy of metacresolsulfonic acid and streptomycin in curing actinomycosis in bovines and equines.
- Moreover, the fact that there were no recorded relapses implies the possibility of a long-term solution to the bacterial infection in these animals.
Diagnosis Process
- Another critical aspect of this research is that it highlighted the importance of clinical observation as the preferred method of diagnosis in instances where laboratory testing isn’t feasible.
Significance of the Study
- The findings of this study hold significant implications for veterinary medicine, particularly in the treatment of actinomycosis in bovines and equines.
- It provides valuable insights into the development of effective treatment strategies for bacterial infections in large animals and could potentially pave the way for more research on other types of antibiotic combination therapies.
