Magnetic resonance imaging features of progressive ethmoid hematoma in 2 horses.
Abstract: Progressive ethmoid hematoma is frequently reported among the pathologies of the upper airways in horses. While several hypotheses have been proposed such as repeated trauma, inflammatory processes and/or chronic infections, congenital phenomena, complication of hemangiomas, and neoplastic processes, the aetiology of this condition is yet unknown. Clinical symptoms are non-specific and includes haemorrhagic nasal discharge, respiratory noise not related to physical exercise and, in most severe cases, phenomena of coughing. The purpose of this case report is to contribute to a correct diagnostic approach to this particular pathology of upper respiratory tract in horses. Magnetic Resonance allows for a very detailed imaging of the development of the disease and suggests appropriate therapeutic choices.

The study focuses on the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose and monitor the progression of ethmoid hematoma, a common illness affecting the upper airway in horses. The authors present two case studies to illustrate the MRI features of this condition and discuss its potential causes and symptoms.
Background
- The research is anchored around progressive ethmoid hematoma, a frequent pathology in horses’ upper airways. Although there are numerous hypotheses, ranging from recurrent trauma and inflammatory processes to congenital phenomena and complications from hemangiomas and neoplastic processes, the exact cause remains unknown.
- This condition presents with vague symptoms such as haemorrhagic nasal discharge, respiratory noise unrelated to physical activity, and coughing in severe cases.
Purpose of the Study
- The research aims to contribute to an accurate diagnostic approach for this specific upper respiratory tract disease in horses.
- Given the non-specific symptoms, a correct diagnosis can be challenging hence, the exploration of Magnetic Resonance (MR) as a useful tool.
Use of MRI in Diagnosis
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is highlighted as a key diagnostic tool. It provides detailed images of the affected area, hence enabling the tracking of the disease’s progression.
- The researchers suggest that MRI could influence therapeutic choices by helping to understand the development of the disease better.
Conclusion
- The research suggests that MRI could play a vital role in diagnosing progressive ethmoid hematoma in horses, guiding treatment, and monitoring disease progression.
- This research provides invaluable insight into managing a commonly occurring condition in horses, with the aim of enhancing both diagnosis and treatment processes.
