Managing Reproduction Emergencies in the Field: Part 1: Injuries in Stallions; Injury of the External Portion of the Reproductive Tract and Gestational Conditions in the Mare.
Abstract: Selected emergency conditions of male and female reproductive tracts in horses are described, including injuries affecting the external genitalia of male horses and emergent conditions arising during gestation in mares. Conditions affecting male horses are discussed in the context of breeding stallions, but kicks or other mechanisms of trauma in the groin can also affect geldings. Priapism, paraphimosis, trauma to the scrotum and testicles, and penile injury are discussed. In mares, traumatic vestibular injury, placentitis, hydropsic conditions, prepubic tendon and abdominal wall compromise, and uterine torsion are included. Clinical recognition of the problem, diagnostic procedures, and treatments are summarized.

The research article explores various emergency conditions related to the reproductive tracts of male and female horses, namely the external genitalia injuries in stallions, and gestational issues in mares.
Emergency Conditions in Male Horses
- The article begins by discussing the impact of injuries on the reproductive tracts of stallions. These injuries could be a result of kicks or mechanisms of trauma in the groin which could also affect geldings. While geldings are castrated male horses, the injuries can still occur in the groin area.
- The conditions affecting male horses include priapism (an abnormal persistent erection of the penis), paraphimosis (a condition where the penis is stuck and cannot retract back into the sheath), trauma to the scrotum and testicles, and penile injury.
Gestational Conditions in Mares
- The latter part of the article focuses on the gestational issues in mares. It comprises traumatic vestibular injuries (injuries to the part of the mare’s reproductive system connected to the outside), placentitis (inflammation of the placenta), hydropsic conditions (excessive fluid build-up within the uterus), prepubic tendon and abdominal wall compromise (lesions or tears to the prepubic tendon and abdominal wall that can lead to complications during gestation), and uterine torsion (a potentially life-threatening condition where the uterus twists around its axis).
Clinical Recognition, Diagnosis, and Treatment
- The article then moves on to recognizing these conditions clinically. This is a crucial step because the prompt identification of conditions helps in choosing better treatment options.
- The article discusses different diagnostic procedures associated with the conditions. An accurate diagnosis is a prerequisite for effective treatment and to avoid further complications.
- The last part of the article is about different available treatments for these conditions. This is the most important part as prompt and effective treatment can prevent further complications, infertility, or even be life-saving.
