Meckel’s diverticulum as a cause of colic: 2 cases with different morphological features.

Abstract: Persistent Meckel's diverticulum is an uncommon embryonic developmental anomaly of the distal small intestine created by a portion of the vitelline duct adjacent to intestine that remains patent. This portion can form a diverticulum (Meckel's diverticulum) or a fibrous band, called vitelloumbilical band, and can be associated with colic after local impaction or strangulation of the small intestine around the remnant. This report describes two cases of Meckel's diverticulum with different morphological features in older horses. This congenital disorder should be considered as a reason for abdominal pain, even in the older horse, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain and recurrent moderate colic.

This research article studies Meckel’s diverticulum, an unusual embryonic anomaly in the small intestine, and its association with abdominal pain in older horses. The report investigates two case studies exhibiting different morphological aspects of this condition.

Understanding Meckel’s Diverticulum

  • Meckel’s diverticulum is an unusual developmental anomaly that persists from the embryonic stage in the distal small intestine. This condition arose from a piece of the vitelline duct that is supposed to disintegrate during the developmental stage but, in this case, stayed patent or open.
  • This preserved segment can result in either a diverticulum, referred to as Meckel’s diverticulum, or a fibrous band known as a vitelloumbilical band.
  • The existence of these abnormalities can lead to colic, a severe abdominal pain, after the local impaction or strangulation of the small intestine around these residual parts.

Case Studies

  • The report documents two distinctive case studies of Meckel’s diverticulum in older horses. It highlights the differing morphological features of the disorder, implying that this condition may manifest differently in different individuals.
  • The two cases offer insights into how Meckel’s diverticulum can present in horses and the extent of the potential complicated health issues associated with it.

Significance

  • The researchers suggest that Meckel’s diverticulum should be considered as a potential cause of abdominal pain in older horses. As the condition isn’t typically common, its presence might be overlooked in diagnosis.
  • Accordingly, it is recommended that Meckel’s diverticulum be included in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain and recurring moderate colic. This would enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve treatment approaches for affected horses.
