Miscellaneous.

Abstract: This section includes clinical conditions which have unique characteristics which make them unsuitable for inclusion in the first six sections. The clinical description, aetiology and histopathologic findings of the unusual ear lesion, aural plaques, are described. Dermatoses complicated by, or caused by, photosensitivity are discussed in regards to their aetiology and pathogenesis as well as clinical features. The suggestion that photosensitization plays a role in the development of the lesions seen in pastern leukocytoclastic vasculitis is made. This section ends with an in depth discussion of the various causes of the nonspecific clinical entity known as 'grease heel', a chronic and often painful condition of the equine foot.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article discusses unique clinical conditions in horses that are not classified under standard categories and specifically explores aural plaques, photosensitivity-related skin conditions, pastern leukocytoclastic vasculitis and a foot ailment called ‘grease heel’.

Aural Plaques

In the study:

  • The aural plaques, also known as auricular papillomas, are commonly seen in horses and are unusual ear lesions.
  • The researchers provide the clinical description, cause (aetiology), and tissue-level (histopathologic) findings for these lesions.

Photosensitivity-related Dermatoses

The research further investigates:

  • Skin conditions (dermatoses) that are either worsened by or caused by exposure to sunlight (photosensitivity).
  • The discussion of these conditions covers their causes (aetiology), the process of disease development (pathogenesis), and clinical features.

Pastern Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis

The paper also examines:

  • Pastern leukocytoclastic vasculitis, a skin condition affecting the lower legs of horses.
  • The authors suggest that photosensitivity could play a part in the development of the lesions seen in this condition.

Grease Heel

Lastly, the research delves into:

  • The different causes of ‘grease heel’, a non-specific term for a chronic and often painful condition in horses’ feet, also known as scratches or mud fever.
  • Extensive discussion is provided to understand the underlying causes and development of this condition.
