Multicentric T-cell lymphoma presenting as inferior palpebral swelling in a Standardbred mare.
Abstract: A 6-year-old Standardbred mare that presented with bilateral palpebral swelling and a left corneal ulcer was diagnosed with a multicentric T-cell lymphoma. Other clinical findings included submandibular lymphadenopathy and oedema, pharyngeal oedema and rhinitis. Prior to euthanasia the horse developed keratomalacia, the onset of which was coincidental with the use of high doses of topical and systemic corticosteroids. Although an unusual presentation, palpebral swelling should be considered as a clinical sign of lymphoma.

The research article is about a rare case of multicentric T-cell lymphoma in a six-year-old Standardbred mare, which started with a bilateral swelling of the eyelids and later resulted in the horse’s euthanasia due to severe health deterioration.
Overview of the Case
- The study investigates a fairly unusual occurrence where a 6-year-old Standardbred mare exhibited symptoms of bilateral palpebral (related to the eyelid) swelling and a left corneal ulcer which after investigation, turned out to be symptoms of multicentric T-cell lymphoma.
- This lymphoma is a type of cancer that starts in T cells, the powerful immune system cells that fight infections and diseases. It was multicentric, meaning that it affected multiple locations in the horse’s body. In this case, it was observed in the eyelids, lymph nodes, throat, and nose (rhinitis).
Subsequent Complications and Diagnosis
- Further complications arose prior to euthanasia. The mare developed keratomalacia, a severe condition that results in the softening and dissolution of the cornea. According to the article, the onset of keratomalacia was coincidental with the administration of high doses of topical and systemic corticosteroids.
- Corticosteroids were likely given to the mare to relieve swelling and inflammation. However, their coincidence with the onset of keratomalacia suggests that they may have adversely affected the cornea’s condition, exacerbating the mare’s overall health situation.
Implications of the Research
- The findings of this case study are significant in equine veterinary medicine as they indicate that palpebral swelling could be one of the clinical signs of lymphoma in horses. This awareness could help veterinarians to diagnose such rare manifestations of lymphoma much earlier.
- Moreover, this report draws attention to the potential side effects of topical and systemic corticosteroids, especially in relation to the onset of keratomalacia, calling for careful use and observation.
