Ocular angiosarcoma in four horses.
Abstract: In 4 horses with ocular angiosarcomas, the common characteristics were that all horses were aged, and the neoplasms developed initially on conjunctival surfaces, grew slowly, and metastasized despite excision and radiation treatment. Histopathologically, the neoplasms were of 2 types: a capillary pattern of scant stroma and endothelial-lined vascular channels, and a solid pattern composed of sheets of pleomorphic cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and poorly defined cytoplasmic borders. Definitive diagnosis was made by use of factor VIII:RAg, which stained the tissues intensely.

The research article details a study on ocular angiosarcomas in four older horses, describing the progression and characteristics of the tumors which failed to respond to treatment and metastasized. The research also explains the diagnostic process and the histopathological appearance of the tumors.
Summary of Study and Findings
- The study observed four old horses that developed ocular angiosarcomas, a rare and aggressive type of cancer that affects the vascular components, particularly the blood vessels.
- While the tumors first appeared on the conjunctival surfaces (the clear tissue covering the white part of the eyes) of the horses, they were observed to grow slowly.
- Despite attempting to slow down or stop the growth of the tumors through surgical excision (removal) and radiation treatment, the tumors unfortunately spread, or metastasized, to other parts of the horses’ bodies.
Histopathological Analysis
- The researchers provided a histopathological (microscopic) examination of the tumors. They found two different patterns in the tumors’ make-up.
- One pattern was a capillary structure, with minimal supporting stroma (connective tissue) and endothelial-lined vascular channels (blood vessels lined by cells).
- The other pattern consisted of solid blocks of cells that had changed drastically in shape and size. These cells also had hyperchromatic (very dark) nuclei and poorly defined boundaries of the cellular substance, indicating rapid cell division and a high level of abnormality.
Diagnostic Technique Used
- The definitive diagnosis of ocular angiosarcoma in the horses was confirmed using factor VIII:RAg staining.
- Factor VIII:RAg is a laboratory technique that uses the factor VIII-related antigen. It is a protein present in the blood that participates in coagulation, which, when stained, intensifies the visibility of the tissue structures to confirm the presence of angiosarcomas.
- Through this staining method, the tissues of the neoplasms (tumors) in the horses under research were stained intensely, confirming the presence of ocular angiosarcoma.
