Ophthalmologic Disorders in Aged Horses.
Abstract: Ocular abnormalities are a common finding in aged horses. Although these seldom cause overt visual deficits detected by their owners, they can be a source of chronic or acute discomfort so early detection, and treatment when available, is essential. Some of these abnormalities are specific to old horses, whereas others are a result of ongoing disease or inflammation that started earlier in life but that becomes more evident when the damage sustained to the eye is advanced. If vision is significantly affected, consideration of human safety and animal welfare is paramount.

The research paper discusses the eye disorders commonly found in older horses, highlighting that while these do not generally result in visible vision loss, they may lead to discomfort, thus necessitating early detection and treatment. It emphasized that while some of these eye disorders are specific to old horses, others may develop due to diseases or inflammation from earlier in life that have become more evident as the eye damage progresses. When vision is significantly affected, the focus should be on the safety of people and the welfare of the animals involved.
Understanding Eye Disorders in Aged Horses
- The research sheds light on ocular abnormalities, which are frequently observed in aged horses. Despite not always leading to noticeable vision loss detected by their owners, they could still cause the horses chronic or acute discomfort. As such, the study emphasizes the importance of early detection and whenever possible, treatment.
Origins of Eye Abnormalities in Horses
- The study highlights that some of these eye irregularities occur specifically in older horses, while others could be a culmination of a disease or inflammation that started earlier in life. It becomes prominently visible in aged horses as the eye damage advances over time.
The Human Safety and Animal Welfare Perspective
- When significant vision loss is identified in horses, the study throws light on the necessity of prioritising human safety and animal welfare. This entails taking necessary precautions to prevent any potential risk to people interacting with the horse and ensuring proper care and attention is given to the well-being of the horse, due to its impaired vision.
