Ovariectomy, ovariohysterectomy, and cesarean section in mares.

Abstract: Ovariectomy and cesarean section are relatively common procedures in a surgical practice in an area in which there are numerous broodmares. Both techniques can be performed by several approaches, which are described in this article. Also described are techniques for ovariohysterectomy, a procedure that is rarely indicated, but that can be performed relatively easily by a capable surgeon.

This research article discusses the surgical procedures of ovariectomy, ovariohysterectomy, and cesarean section in mares, elaborating on various approaches and techniques.

Overview of Surgical Procedures in Mares

  • The research primarily focuses on ovariectomy and cesarean section, surgeries which are commonly performed on broodmares in regions with a higher mare population. It covers different approaches and techniques for performing these surgeries optimally.
  • The article also touches upon the topic of ovariohysterectomy, a surgical procedure that in contrast to ovariectomy and cesarean section, is rarely needed. However, the procedure can easily be carried out by a proficient surgeon, hence the importance of understanding its methods.

Description of Surgical Approaches

  • The research admits that there are various approaches for performing the discussed surgeries. The differences among them could be based on factors like procedure complexity, mare’s condition, equipment availability, and surgeon’s skill and experience level. A well-equipped skilled surgeon would be capable of deciding the best approach based on these factors.

Importance of Proficient Surgeons

  • The research underlines the importance of skilled surgeons in performing these surgeries, especially when dealing with ovariohysterectomy, which, while not often required, can be complex. It implies that these surgeries, although common, demand a high level of competence and expertise, reinforcing the idea that a capable, experienced surgeon holds the key to successful execution of these procedures.
