Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in a racehorse.

Abstract: A 4-year-old thoroughbred stallion with a history of loss of racing form was studied over a period of approximately 7 months. At the initial examination he showed positive T waves in 1 chest lead and wandering of the pacemaker. This was followed by an episode of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which disappeared spontaneously and was replaced by significant T wave changes in all the chest leads. During a period when these changes persisted, there was progressive lengthening of the P wave and the P-R interval. Because the last ECG showed evidence of intra-atrial block, first degree A-V block and T wave changes, the owner was advised that a fluctuating myocarditis was affecting the horse's performance and it was retired to stud. This appears to be the first report of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in Australia, and it demonstrates the value of regular follow-up examinations in horses with initial electrocardiographs showing only minor departures from normal. The case also suggests that when sharp reversals of racing form occur, the possibility of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation being the cause should be kept in mind.

The research investigates a case of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heart rhythm, in a 4-year-old racehorse. Findings demonstrate this condition may cause substantial performance concerns, leading to the horse’s retirement and highlights the importance of regular examinations in identifying such health issues.

About the Study

  • The research supervised a 4-year-old thoroughbred stallion who had shown a decrease in racing performance over a seven-month period.
  • Initial examination unveiled anomalies in the horse’s heart rhythm – The T waves showed positivity in one chest lead while the pacemaker demonstrated a pattern of ‘wandering’ or erratic behavior.

The Condition: Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

  • The horse then developed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, an intermittent condition where the heart beats irregularly and often rapidly. The atrial fibrillation that the horse exhibited vanished on its own but was supplanted by significant alterations in the T waves in all chest leads.
  • The ECG carried disclosed an intra-atrial block, first-degree A-V block, and T wave changes, which led to the analysis that the horse had a fluctuating myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart muscle.

Significance and Recommendations

  • Consequently, the horse’s owner was advised about the myocarditis which was impairing the horse’s performance and hence, the horse was retired to stud.
  • The researchers attributed the unanticipated reversals in the horse’s racing form to the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and emphasized the importance of regular veterinary checks, particularly if preliminary electrocardiographs show minor irregularities.
  • As per the researchers, this suggests that when sharp reversals of racing form occur, the likelihood of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation being the cause should be contemplated.
  • The study is deemed significant as it appears to be the initial report of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in a horse in Australia. This research serves as a pilot for further studies on similar cases globally.
