Pasteurella caballi infection following a horse bite.
Abstract: The isolation of Pasteurella caballi from an horse-bite wound in a 56-year-old man is reported. Biochemical characteristics are described and compared with the other species representing the genus Pasteurella. This strain probably represents the first human isolate of P. caballi in France.

The research paper reports on a case where Pasteurella caballi, a type of bacteria commonly found in horses, was isolated from a horse-bite wound on a 56-year-old man in France. The biochemical characteristics of the strain were analyzed and compared to other species of the genus Pasteurella.
Case Description and Isolation of Pasteurella caballi
- The article begins with a case report of a 56-year-old man who developed an infection after being bitten by a horse. This marks the first recognized case where an infection from Pasteurella caballi had been contracted by humans in France.
- The researchers were able to isolate the bacterium from the wound for further study. The isolation of the bacteria is an important aspect as it allows researchers to better understand the characteristics and behavior of the infectious agent in a controlled laboratory environment.
Biochemical Characteristics of Pasteurella caballi
- The isolated bacteria was studied for its biochemical characteristics. Biochemical analysis of bacteria involves studying the chemical substances and processes occurring in the bacteria such as carbohydrate fermentation ability, protein utilization, and other enzymatic reactions. This helps in identifying the bacteria at the species level and understanding its capabilities.
- The biochemical properties of the Pasteurella caballi isolated from the horse-bite wound was compared with other bacteria from the same genus to recognize distinct and common characteristics.
Implications
- This research adds valuable data to the medical literature for Pasteurella infections, particularly in human cases originating from horse bites.
- Understanding the characteristics of Pasteurella caballi may help medical professionals provide better care for those bitten by horses as they can be aware of potential infections that can arise from such bites and the suitable form of treatment.
