Pergolide treatment for Cushing’s syndrome in a horse.

Abstract: A 16-year-old, male, Hanoverian horse had a three-month history of weight loss, hirsutism and polyuria/polydypsia. Examinations revealed neutrophilia, lymphopenia, hyper glycaemia and abnormalities in hepatic function. A tentative diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism was made. The results of thyroid-releasing hormone and combined dexamethasone suppression and ACTH stimulation tests suggested the presence of a pituitary adenoma. The horse was treated with pergolide and beneficial clinical and biochemical responses were observed within one to six months.

This research article documents a case where a 16-year-old Hanoverian horse was treated with the drug pergolide for Cushing’s syndrome, showing positive health responses within six months.

Introduction to the Case

  • The subject of this study is a 16-year-old Hanoverian horse who has been experiencing weight loss, hirsutism (excessive hairiness), and polyuria/polydypsia (excessive urination and thirst) for the past three months.
  • Initial examinations of the horse revealed several health abnormalities, including neutrophilia (high level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood), lymphopenia (low level of lymphocytes, another type of white blood cell, in the blood), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), and signs of impaired liver function.

Tentative Diagnosis

  • Basing on these symptoms and test results, the veterinary team made a tentative diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism, also known as Cushing’s syndrome, a condition characterized by the body’s production of too much of the hormone cortisol.
  • Additional examinations and tests, including a thyroid-releasing hormone test and a combined dexamethasone suppression and ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) stimulation test, suggested the presence of a pituitary adenoma, a benign tumor in the pituitary gland which is common in horses with Cushing’s syndrome.

Treatment and Outcome

  • Having identified the probable cause for the horse’s symptoms, the vets treated the horse with a drug called pergolide, commonly used in treating Parkinson’s disease in humans, but also recognized as an effective treatment for Cushing’s syndrome in horses.
  • Successful results of this treatment method were observed within one to six months. Significant improvements were noted in the horse’s health condition, with beneficial clinical and biochemical responses. However, the article does not detail the specific health responses observed in the horse after the treatment.

Significance of the Study

  • This case study provides evidence that pergolide can be an effective treatment for horses diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome. It contributes to the body of scientific literature on this subject and may guide veterinary practices in similar future cases.
