Periorbital skull fractures in five horses.
Abstract: Periorbital skull fractures were diagnosed in 5 horses, and were associated with ophthalmic complications including corneal ulceration, uveitis, and entrapment of the eye by retrobulbar bone fragments. Physical examination was of greater diagnostic use than radiography. Surgical repair was performed on all horses and was associated with a more favorable postoperative appearance in horses treated acutely; however, the cosmetic results were considered acceptable in all horses. Major postoperative complications were not observed.

This research studies periorbital skull fractures in horses and how these can be diagnosed and treated successfully. The research reveals that physical examination is a more efficient diagnostic tool than radiography and that surgical repairs can provide satisfactory cosmetic results and no major postoperative complications.
Overview of the Research
- The study focuses on the prevalence and consequences of periorbital skull fractures in five horses. These periorbital fractures are injuries occurring around the eye socket, which can cause severe ophthalmic complications like corneal ulceration, inflammation of the uvea (uveitis), and trapping of the eye by bone fragments behind the eyeball (retrobulbar bone fragments).
- This research is expansive, covering the diagnostic aspects, treatment procedures as well as postoperative results of periorbital skull fractures in horses.
Diagnostic Methodology
- The research highlights the comparative usefulness of physical examinations and radiography (an imaging technique using X-rays) in diagnosing periorbital fractures in equines. According to this study, physical examinations proved more beneficial and reliable in identifying these fractures over radiography.
Treatment Procedure & Results
- The five horses included in the study all underwent surgical repair. The operations resulted in a visually better appearance postoperatively, particularly in horses that received prompt treatment. However, the overall cosmetic results were found to be acceptable, even in horses not treated immediately after injury.
- Remarkably, the surgeries did not lead to any major postoperative complications, indicating the procedural safety and effectiveness of this treatment.
Conclusion
- The study’s findings suggest that physical examinations are a more dependable tool for accurately diagnosing periorbital fractures in horses and that surgical repairs, even when not performed acutely, can yield satisfactory cosmetic results without major postoperative complications.
- The study’s results have significant implications in veterinary medicine, enhancing the understanding of periorbital fracture diagnosis and treatment in horses, potentially improving their clinical management and welfare.
