Preliminary study of tissue concentrations of penicillin after local administration into the guttural pouches in four healthy horses.

Abstract: Treatment of subclinical carriers of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi with a gelatine-penicillin formulation deposited in the guttural pouch has been empirically proposed, but data on local tissue penicillin concentrations after treatment are lacking. Methods: We analysed tissue levels of penicillin after administration into the guttural pouches of four healthy horses. Two horses received local treatment with gelatine-penicillin and two horses received local treatment with an intramammary formulation of penicillin. Tissues were harvested for analysis either 12 or 24 h later. Conclusions: Results indicate that local treatment may be effective, but more research on optimal drug formulations in a larger sample size is warranted.

This research study explored the concentration of penicillin in horse tissues after administering the drug locally into the guttural pouches of the animals. The study aimed to contribute to the understanding of the effectiveness of such treatments against carriers of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, a bacteria affecting horses.

Methodology of the Research

The research involved the following key steps:

  • The study population comprised of four healthy horses.
  • The horses were divided into two groups with two horses each – one group received a gelatine-penicillin formulation while the other received an intramammary penicillin formulation.
  • The chosen drug was administered locally into their guttural pouches.
  • Twelve or twenty-four hours later, the horse’s tissues were harvested for analysis to determine the concentration of penicillin.

Results of the Research

The findings from the study included:

  • The research highlighted promising preliminary results as the data indicated that local treatment might be effective.
  • Nevertheless, the study concluded that more comprehensive research involving a larger sample size is necessary. This is to facilitate a more dependable understanding of optimal drug formulation for such treatments.

Significance of the Research

The study holds crucial implications for understanding how to treat subclinical carriers of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, a deadly bacteria that affects horses.

  • By focusing on local administration of penicillin treatments, the researchers underlined a potentially efficient strategy that could bring about a higher concentration of the drug within the tissues of the guttural pouches.
  • The preliminary findings could pave the way for more advanced research in the area and potentially revolutionize the approach towards treating such bacterial carriers among horses.
