[Prevalence of dental disorders in 483 horses and ponies].

Abstract: Prevalence of dental disorders in 483 horses and ponies Five equine veterinarians working at three equine referral hospitals examined the oral cavity of 483 horses and ponies prior to surgery, to gain information about the prevalence of common dental disorders in the horse. A thorough examination, using hands/fingers, a full-mouth speculum, a dental mirror and a good light source, is essential to detect such disorders. Many horses examined needed dental attention even though there were no problems with mastication or riding. The most detected abnormalities were sharp enamel points on the buccal side of the upper arcade and the lingual side of the lower arcade, and hooks at 106/206 and 311/411. Regular dental care would improve the condition and welfare of horses.

This research explores the prevalence of dental disorders in horses and ponies prior to surgery by conducting thorough oral examinations. The study finds that many horses required dental attention despite showing no signs of mastication or riding issues, and suggests that regular dental care can improve a horse’s overall welfare and condition.

Objective of the study

  • The study sought to understand the commonality of dental disorders in horses and ponies. Five Equine veterinarians from three different equine referral hospitals conducted an examination of the oral cavity of 483 horses and ponies prior to their surgery. This was done to identify any prevalent dental issues.

Examination Process

  • A detailed examination of the horse’s oral cavity was deemed essential for the detection of these disorders. This examination involved the use of hands and fingers, a full-mouth speculum, a dental mirror, and a suitable light source to properly inspect the horse’s mouth.

Findings

  • The study revealed that whilst there were no evident problems with mastication or riding, many of the examined horses still required dental attention. This indicates that the presence of dental disorders in horses may not always result in observable behavioral issues such as eating or performance difficulties.
  • The most frequently noticed abnormalities were sharp enamel points on the buccal side of the upper arcade and the lingual side of the lower arcade. Hooks were found at 106/206 and 311/411.

Recommendations

  • Based on the findings, the research recommends regular dental care for horses. According to the study, this would significantly improve the horse’s welfare and overall health condition, by preventing any potential dental issues from escalating in severity or causing other health complications.
