Prevalence of Juvenile Osteochondral Conditions in Yearling Thoroughbred Racehorses in Southern Brazil.

The research article investigates the rate of juvenile osteochondral conditions, which are disorders in the joints and bones, in young racehorses in Southern Brazil. The report also aims to understand the relevance of these findings and their implications on the health of the animals.

Research Objective

• The primary aim of this study is to understand the prevalence of juvenile osteochondral conditions (JOCCs) in young racehorses, popularly known as Thoroughbred yearlings, in Southern Brazil. Apart from this, the researchers also revisit the animals studied by Bastos et al. in 2017 as weanlings and try to compare the radiographic findings for the two ages.

Methodology

• The researchers investigated the radiographs of 76 Thoroughbred yearlings, both male and female, from Paraná State, Southern Brazil.
• The various joints like the proximal interphalangeal, metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal (MC/MT), tarsal, and femorotibial (FT) joints were assessed using 24 radiographic projections.
• They used a severity index rated as 0, 1, 2, 4, or 8, and the sum of these would determine an osteoarticular status (OAS) – ‘good’, ‘intermediate’, or ‘poor’, for each animal.

Results

• The results showed that 92% of the animals had at least one finding consistent with JOCCs, indicating a high prevalence of these conditions amongst yearlings.
• The most affected region was the tarsal joint with 72.9% cases, followed by the FT (50%), MT (25%), and MC (23%) joints.
• They also noted that 33 horses, or 43.4%, showed a decline in their OAS, while nine horses, or 11.8%, exhibited an improvement from their weanling to yearling age.

Conclusions

• Based on the radiographic findings, the researchers came to a temporary conclusion that JOCCs are quite frequent in Thoroughbred yearlings.
• However, they also expressed the need for further studies to truly understand and interpret these results and gauge their implications on the overall wellbeing and performance of the horses.
