Primary unilateral fibroleiomyoma of the ovary in a pregnant mare: a case report.

Abstract: Fibroleiomyomas of the ovary are rare. This smooth muscle tumour may develop and increase in size during pregnancy. Diagnosis is based on histological and immunohistochemical analyses. Histologically, the ovarian fibroleiomyoma consists of non-invasive bundles of smooth muscle cells that synthesize collagen-like extracellular matrix. This case report describes an ovarian fibroleiomyoma in a pregnant multiparous broodmare with a history of intermittent signs of colic.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article is a case study about a rare occurrence of an ovarian fibroleiomyoma in a pregnant mare that showed occasional symptoms of colic.

Introduction

Fibroleiomyomas are quite unusual and are a type of smooth muscle tumor. In certain situations, these may develop and grow in size during pregnancy. The tumor’s diagnosis happens primarily through histological and immunohistochemical studies.

Ovarian Fibroleiomyoma

  • Fibroleiomyomas of the ovary are neoplasms comprising smooth muscle cells, creating a collagen-like extracellular matrix. They are unique for their non-invasive characteristics.
  • They can be detected through a combination of histological and immunohistochemical analyses.

Case of the Pregnant Mare

The current paper revolves around a detailed report of an unusual case where an ovarian fibroleiomyoma was identified in a pregnant broodmare who had been showing intermittent symptoms of colic.

  • The broodmare had a history of several successful pregnancies in the past, hence was a multiparous animal.
  • The mare intermittently showed signs of colic, a common disorder in horses where they suffer from abdominal discomfort or gastrointestinal problems.
  • In this documented case, the colic symptoms observed in the mare were likely connected to the growth of the ovarian fibroleiomyoma.

Conclusion

The article presents an unusual case study where a pregnant mare shows the ocurrence of fibroleiomyoma. Such a report can contribute to the literature in the veterinary field, particularly in the area of gynaecological studies on equine health, and help devise better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for similar conditions in the future.
