[Purposeful (blood-)horse breeding (author’s transl)].
Abstract: Horse-breeding in the Netherlands is briefly reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the number of foals of various breeds. Some effects of inbreeding in Friesian horses are discussed. As regards methods selection, attention is mainly paid to saddle horses. The role of veterinarians (from the point of view of selection for soundness) is described. Selection is based on the results of studies in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht. A number of these results are reviewed.

The research primarily discusses the status and aspects of horse-breeding in the Netherlands, focusing on the variety of horse breeds, inbreeding effects in Friesian horses, methods of saddle horse selections, and the role of veterinarians. The data used for the study is based on the research conducted at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht.
About Horse Breeding in Netherlands
- The paper opens with an introduction to horse-breeding activities in the Netherlands. This includes a study and comparison on the numbers of foals born across different breeds in the country.
Effects of Inbreeding in Friesian Horses
- Friesian horses, one of the breeds in focus for the Netherlands, are examined for the effects of inbreeding. Inbreeding, or the breeding of close relatives, could have diverse effects on the physical and genetic health of the offspring, which the paper aims to explore.
Methods of Saddle Horse Selection
- The paper then delves into the methods of selection applied to saddle horses in particular, elaborating on the techniques and criteria used to choose individuals for breeding. Saddle horses are a specific category that is generally used for riding; their selection could be based on various factors like their health, stamina, body build etc.
Role of Veterinarians
- Veterinarians play a critical role in the horse-breeding process, particularly in selecting horses that are suitable for breeding. This paper discusses their responsibilities and perspectives on the selection process for the horses, including their role in ensuring that selected horses are healthy, have stable genetic traits and show promising characteristics for the future generations.
Results of Veterinary Studies
- The article is heavily based on the results from studies conducted at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, Netherlands. These studies have produced significant information on horse-breeding and related topics in the country, providing a scientific basis for the discussions presented in this paper.
