Radiographic appearance of maxillary sinus feed impaction in a horse.
Abstract: A 15-year-old Belgian gelding presented in respiratory distress, with bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, and right-sided epistaxis. The horse had a 5-year history of dental disease and had been recently losing weight. Radiographs indicated tooth root abscessation of the right maxillary third molar tooth and probable maxillary sinus feed impaction. These findings were confirmed at surgery and necropsy. The stippled, granular radiographic appearance described here is highly characteristic of sinus feed impaction.

The research article discusses a case study where a horse suffering from dental disease and weight loss was diagnosed with sinus feed impaction and tooth root abscessation, based on radiographic findings.
Case Study Overview
- The subject of this case study was a 15-year-old Belgian gelding horse, who was presented with respiratory issues, bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, and right-sided epistaxis (nosebleeds).
- Along with these symptoms, the horse had a history of dental disease for the past five years and was recently experiencing weight loss.
Radiographic Findings
- The researchers, after examination, carried out radiography which indicated certain abnormal conditions.
- There was evidence of abscessation (formation of abscesses) in the root of the right maxillary third molar tooth.
- Additionally, the radiographic images suggested a probability of maxillary sinus feed impaction. Impaction in such cases means the blocking or filling of the sinus cavity with food, which results from an animal’s inability to swallow properly.
Surgical Findings and Analysis
- The predictions made based on the radiographs were confirmed during a surgical procedure.
- Moreover, necropsy, which is an autopsy performed on animals, further corroborated these findings.
- The research paper observed that the stippled, granular appearance seen on the radiographic image was highly indicative of sinus feed impaction.
Significance of the Research
- This case study demonstrates the efficacy of radiography in diagnosing disorders such as feed impaction and abscessation in horses, especially when shown alongside other signs and symptoms.
- Therefore, these findings can contribute to veterinary practices by aiding in the detection of similar conditions in horses and possibly other animals.
