Radiographic assessment of navicular bones, based on changes in the distal nutrient foramina.
Abstract: Radiographic examination of the navicular bones of 258 horses was carried out. Of these 258 horses, 83 were sound (Group A), 151 had been diagnosed clinically as having navicular disease (Group B), and 24 had a forefoot lameness of unknown aetiology (Group C). Seven basic shapes of distal nutrient foramina were identified from these radiographs. A scoring system was then developed based on these different types of distal nutrient foramina. When this scoring system was applied to the radiographs of the 258 horses examined significant differences were found between the mean navicular scores of the horses in Groups A, B and C. It is considered that this navicular scoring system could be very useful for comparing radiographs of the navicular bones of different horses and recording serial radiographs of navicular bones of the same horse.

This study involves the use of radiographic scans to analyze and score the differences in navicular bones amongst various groups of horses, using changes in distal nutrient foramina as a measurement standard.
Overview of the Research Procedure
- The researchers conducted radiographic examinations of the navicular bones of 258 horses to study the distal nutrient foramina. The navicular bone is a small bone found in the feet of horses, often associated with a debilitating condition known as navicular disease.
- The 258 horses were divided into three groups. Group A (83 horses) were sound, meaning they showed no symptoms of any health problems. Group B (151 horses) had been previously diagnosed clinically with navicular disease. Group C (24 horses) had unknown forefoot lameness, meaning a difficulty in walking without a known cause.
Discovery & Implementation of Navicular Scoring System
- Through their radiographic evaluations, researchers were able to identify seven basic shapes of distal nutrient foramina. The distal nutrient foramina are tiny holes in the bone that allow for the passage of blood vessels and nerves. Alterations in the shape or size of this foramina can indicate degenerative bone changes and diseases, such as navicular disease.
- A unique scoring system was then created based on these seven identified types of distal nutrient foramina. This was an attempt to standardize the analysis of the radiographic images.
Results and Applications of the Study
- The application of this new scoring system led to significant observations. Major differences were found between the mean navicular scores of the three groups (A, B, and C) of horses.
- The research provides valuable insights into the potential use of this scoring system in comparing radiographs of navicular bones from different horses and for recording changes in serial radiographs of the same horse. This could be a diagnostic tool for quickly identifying and categorizing navicular issues based on distal nutrient foramina changes.
