Radiological anatomy of distal phalanx of front foot in the pure Iranian Arabian horse.

Abstract: Among the different breeds of horses, Asil horses with a five thousand year history have played an important role in human life. This study was designed as a result of the lack of information about the normal radiographic anatomy of this breed. Methods: Radiography of the distal phalanx and associated soft tissue structures of the front feet of 10 healthy pure Iranian Arabian horses was performed on lateromedial radiographic projection to determine normal radiographic morphometry of this part. There were no problems in their limbs and in their history. Results: Obtained radiograph of each front distal phalanx was used to measure important distances, angles and ratios of the hoof wall. There was no significant difference between left and right digits for any radiographic determination. Conclusions: Measurements of this study differed from those reported in other breeds, so it can be used in the future as reference values for diagnosis of laminitis in front feet of Iranian Arabian horses.

This research focused on studying the radiological anatomy of the distal phalanx, the structure of the front feet, in Iranian Arabian horses. Through radiographic projections, the study was able to map out key aspects of the hoof wall, which can serve as reference values for diagnosing laminitis in this specific horse breed.

Objectives and Methodology of the Research

  • The study was initiated due to a lack of information on the normal radiographic anatomy of the distal phalanx in pure Iranian Arabian horses, also known as Asil horses. These horses have a long history stretching back five thousand years and have played crucial roles in human societies.
  • The radiographic study focused on the front feet of 10 healthy pure Iranian horses. Horses selected for the study had no recorded history of limb problems.
  • The researchers operated a lateromedial radiographic projection to elaborate a clear visual of the hoof wall. This test helped record all the crucial measurements for the radiographic determination.
  • The aim was to construct an accurate database of the hoof wall’s crucial distances, angles, and ratios for future researchers and horse health professionals.

Results of the Research

  • The radiographic projections revealed that there was no significant difference between the left and right digits of the horses’ feet. This consistency further validates the measurements recorded in the study.
  • The measurements acquired differed from the data reported in previous studies conducted on other horse breeds. This difference emphasizes the importance of breed-specific studies for accurate radiographic anatomy.

Conclusion and Future Implications

  • The results yielded from the study can be used in the future as reference values for diagnosing laminitis in the front feet of Iranian Arabian horses.
  • The study underlines the significance of detailed breed-specific radiographic studies for accurately diagnosing and understanding hoof-related health issues in horses.
