Objective of the Study

The study aimed to address a specific case of a Dutch Warmblood gelding horse that had sustained a fracture in the palmar tuberosity of its intermediate carpal bone. The researchers sought to evaluate the effectiveness of arthrotomy in removing the fracture fragment and documenting the horse’s recovery process.

Methodology

• The research commenced when the horse was admitted, two weeks post its accident. An understanding of the affected area and the extent of the injury was done by investigating dorsolateral-palmaromedial oblique and flexed lateromedial radiographic views.
• Once the fracture line had been established, the team proceeded to perform an arthrotomy of the palmar intercarpal joint to remove the fracture fragment. This methodology involved surgically entering the carpal canal to access the palmar intercarpal joint.

Results and Conclusion

• The study states that surgical intervention had been successful as evidenced by the horse’s smooth recovery. Twenty months after surgery, the horse was noted to be show jumping without any manifestation of lameness
• Therefore, the documented case indicates that a palmar fracture in a horse’s intermediate carpal bone can be treated effectively using surgical interventions like arthrotomy. It also highlighted that such surgical treatments do not impose any long-term adverse effects, as the horse was able to live a normal life post-surgery.
