Renal pseudoaneurysm as a cause of hematuria in a colt.
Abstract: An 8-month-old Arabian-warmblood cross colt was evaluated for overt hematuria. The horse was severely anemic on presentation. A unilateral intrarenal vascular anomaly with unilateral pyelonephritis was diagnosed. Nephrectomy was attempted but was unsuccessful, and postmortem examination demonstrated the presence of an intrarenal pseudoaneurysm.

This research article investigates a case of an 8-month-old Arabian-warmblood cross colt suffering from severe anemia and overt hematuria caused by the presence of intrarenal pseudoaneurysm and unilateral pyelonephritis, conditions diagnosed during clinical examination and confirmed postmortem.
Study Overview
- The study presents a detailed case study of an 8-month-old Arabian-warmblood cross colt, which was observed to have overt hematuria and severe anemia.
- Through careful evaluation and investigation, the colt was found to be suffering from an unusual case of a unilateral intrarenal vascular anomaly along with unilateral pyelonephritis.
- A surgical intervention, in the form of a nephrectomy, was attempted to treat the condition but proved to be unsuccessful.
- A postmortem examination of the colt confirmed the presence of an intrarenal pseudoaneurysm, a rare and serious condition that could have been the underlying cause of these observed symptoms.
Hematuria and Severe Anemia in the Colt
- Hematuria, the presence of blood in urine, was the initial observable symptom in the colt, leading to further investigations.
- The colt was also severely anemic, indicating a significant loss of red blood cells, probably due to the hematuria.
- This combination of symptoms suggested a significant health issue, requiring further examination and diagnostics to determine the exact cause.
Diagnosis and Surgical Attempt
- Upon examination, the colt was diagnosed with a unilateral intrarenal vascular anomaly – a rare condition involving abnormal blood vessel formation in one of the kidneys, along with unilateral pyelonephritis – an inflammation of the kidney usually due to a bacterial infection.
- A surgical procedure, a nephrectomy, which involves removal of the affected kidney was attempted, but it was unsuccessful due to the severity and complexity of the conditions.
Postmortem Findings
- A postmortem examination revealed the presence of an intrarenal pseudoaneurysm, which is essentially a false aneurysm within the kidney.
- This condition involves the formation of a bulging blood vessel due to a leak in the arterial wall, which can lead to serious complications, including blood clots, rupture, and severe internal bleeding, potentially explaining the severe anemia and hematuria observed in the colt.
- This finding further emphasized the severity and complexity of the colt’s health condition, and potentially provided significant insights for similar future cases.
