Retrospective study assessing efficacy of treatment of large colonic impactions.
Abstract: Cases with a history of colic due to a large colonic impaction were recruited retrospectively to assess the treatment efficacy and complications of oral and parenteral fluid therapy regimes for correction of primary large colon impactions. Oral isotonic fluids had been administered at varying intervals following initial treatment with magnesium sulphate and water. There was no significant difference in complication rates between groups. Considering complication rates with impaction clearance, hourly administration of oral fluids appears to be the most appropriate treatment regime of those investigated.

This research study retrospectively reviews and assesses the effectiveness of oral and parenteral fluid therapy regimens in treating large colonic impactions in patients experiencing colic. The study finds that oral fluids administered hourly may be the most appropriate treatment method.
Background and Aim of the Study
- The study was conducted with the aim to retrospectively assess the efficacy of different treatment options for large colonic impactions, which are commonly associated with colic symptoms.
- Specifically, the researchers wanted to examine the impact and aftermath of oral and parenteral fluid therapy. This form of treatment has been used to correct primary large colon impactions in previous patient cases.
Methodology of the Study
- The researchers collected data from cases where patients had a history of colic due to large colonic impactions.
- In these cases, oral isotonic fluids had been given at varying intervals. Each case started with an initial treatment of magnesium sulphate and water to break down the impaction.
- The researchers then compared these different treatment regimes to determine their complication rates.
Findings of the Study
- The study found that there was no significant difference in complication rates between various treatment groups in this sample of cases.
- Considering the complication rates with impaction clearance, the study put forward the hourly administration of oral fluids as the most suitable form of treatment. This was the treatment regime that appeared the most suitable among those investigated during the research.
Conclusion
- Overall, the research offers an interesting insight into effective treatment options for large colonic impactions. Despite finding no significant difference in complication rates across various treatment regimes, the authors suggest that the administration of oral fluids on an hourly basis may prove to be the most appropriate treatment plan.
