[Riding therapy in the rehabilitation of mobility-impaired children].

Abstract: Riding therapy is a comprehensive and functional form of rehabilitation, in which the rehabilitee, the horse and the riding therapist collaborate in order to achieve individually assigned goals that support rehabilitation. In Finland, riding therapy is therapeutic rehabilitation carried out by riding therapists who have undergone approved training. The therapy is mainly implemented in an individual form, but small group working is also applied, e.g. in the form of pair therapy and therapeutic vaulting. In Europe, this form of rehabilitation has been divided into hippotherapy supporting motor functions and heilpedagogical riding therapy functioning in support of upbringing.

The research paper examines the impact and effectiveness of riding therapy (also known as equine therapy) on mobility-impaired children in Finland. The study focuses on understanding how collaboration between the patient, horse, and therapist can help achieve rehabilitation goals.

Riding Therapy: An Overview

Riding therapy, or equine therapy, is a comprehensive form of rehabilitation. It includes:

  • A collaborative approach involving the patient (usually mobility-impaired children in this context), a horse, and a trained riding therapist.
  • Specific goals are set individually for each patient to support their rehabilitation journey.
  • In Finland, this form of therapy is performed by approved and trained riding therapists.

Implementation of Riding Therapy

Therapy typically happens on an individual basis, but the practice of group therapy is not uncommon, as disclosed in the paper. It may involve:

  • Small group activities, such as pair therapy and therapeutic vaulting, where more than one patient is involved in the therapy session.
  • These group activities stimulate social interactions and cooperation.

European Classification of Riding Therapy

The research also sheds light on how riding therapy is classified in Europe. It is mainly split into:

  • Hippotherapy: This form of therapy is primarily aimed at improving motor functions in patients. It utilizes the rhythmic and repetitive movements of a horse to improve the patient’s posture, balance, mobility, and function.
  • Heilpedagogical Riding Therapy: This therapy goes beyond physical rehabilitation, providing support in terms of upbringing and helping with behavior modification and improvement in social skills. It’s often used for patients with cognitive, behavioral, and emotional difficulties.
