Role of Laparoscopy in Diagnosis and Management of Equine Colic.

Abstract: Laparoscopy can be valuable in the diagnosis and treatment of specific types of colic in horses. Most commonly, it is used for horses with chronic recurrent colic for further diagnosis, such as by taking biopsies or to perform treatment. Laparoscopy is also often used for prevention of colic, for example, by closing the nephrosplenic space or epiploic foramen. There are fewer indications for laparoscopy in acute colic, though in some cases the technique can be useful for diagnosis, after which the procedure is converted to a hand-assisted laparoscopy. However, manipulation of the intestine is limited compared with an open laparotomy.

This research examines the use of laparoscopy as a method of diagnosing and treating certain types of colic in horses, particularly chronic recurrent colic. Although the laparoscopy technique has some limitations in handling intestine in comparison to open laparotomy, it finds some uses in acute cases too.

Role of Laparoscopy in Diagnosis

  • Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, is used for diagnosing various ailments including chronic recurrent colic in horses. It is particularly useful when other diagnostic methods fail to identify the source or cause of the colic.
  • The procedure allows for a direct view of the horse’s abdominal cavity to identify issues such as inflammation, obstruction, or other abnormalities that may cause colic symptoms.
  • In some cases, Laparoscopy enables veterinarians to take vital biopsy samples which further aids in a thorough diagnosis.

Laparoscopy as a Treatment Option for Colic

  • The use of laparoscopy is not only limited to diagnosing colic in horses, but it is also utilized in the actual treatment of the condition.
  • The paper emphasizes its role in performing treatments such as closing the nephrosplenic space or epiploic foramen, which are linked with the prevention of colic.

Limitations and Adaptations in Acute Cases

  • The usage of laparoscopy in acute colic is quite limited according to the research. This is primarily due to the method’s constraints with respect to the manipulation of the intestine, which is less compared to an open laparotomy.
  • However, it still finds some utility in diagnosing acute cases after which the procedure might be converted into a hand-assisted laparoscopy for effective treatment.
