Rupture of the diaphragm in the horse.
Abstract: Four cases of fatal diaphragmatic rupture in the horse are described. In 2 cases there was no history of injury but the other 2 animals had sustained recent thoracic trauma. Three of the horses had signs of colic and bowel obstruction complicated, in 2 cases, by respiratory embarrassment; the fourth died rapidly, presumably of shock. Previously published cases are reviewed and the causes, clinical effects, diagnosis and treatment of the disorder are discussed.

This research article studies four instances of fatal diaphragmatic rupture in horses. The symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment of this disorder are detailed.
Overview of Cases
- The article described four cases where horses suffered from fatal diaphragmatic rupture.
- In two cases, there was no prior record of injury. However, the remaining two horses had recently endured thoracic trauma.
Symptoms
- Three out of the four horses displayed symptoms of colic and bowel obstruction.
- These symptoms were complicated by respiratory distress in two of the horses.
- The fourth horse died quickly, presumably due to shock.
Previous Reports
- Earlier reported instances of diaphragmatic ruptures in horses were also reviewed in this research.
Causes, Clinical Effects, Diagnosis and Treatment
- Besides showcasing these cases, the article discussed potential causes, the clinical manifestations, the diagnosis process and the possible treatments for this disorder.
- Additional research is needed to further understand these aspects, as most of the current insight is based on limited studies and occurrences.
