Safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of an extract of olibanum from Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr. for use in dogs and horses (FEFANA asbl).
Abstract: Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of olibanum extract from Roxb. ex Colebr., when used as a sensory additive (flavouring) in feed for all dogs and horses. The FEEDAP Panel concluded that the additive under assessment is safe for horses at the maximum proposed use level of 100 mg/kg in complete feed. For dogs, the calculated safe concentration in feed is 330 mg/kg complete feed. The additive is considered safe for consumers when used at the proposed conditions of use in horses. The additive under assessment should be considered as non-irritant to skin and eyes, but in the absence of data, no conclusion can be drawn on its potential to be a dermal and respiratory sensitiser. The use of the additive under the proposed conditions of use in feed for horses was not expected to pose a risk for the environment. species and their preparations were recognised to flavour food. Since their function in feed would be essentially the same as that in food, no further demonstration of efficacy was considered necessary.

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research examines the safety and effectiveness of using an extract of olibanum from the Boswellia serrata plant as a flavor enhancer in animal feed, specifically for dogs and horses. It was concluded that the extract is safe for these animals, as well as consumers of these animals, and does not pose environmental risks.
Study Purpose and Request
- The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) to provide a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of olibanum extract from Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr.
- This extract was evaluated as a sensory additive (flavouring) in feed for all dogs and horses.
Safety Assessment
- The FEEDAP Panel determined the additive of olibanum extract to be safe for horses at the maximum proposed use level of 100 mg/kg in complete feed.
- For dogs, the safe concentration in feed was calculated at 330 mg/kg complete feed.
- It was determined the additive is considered safe for consumers when used at the proposed conditions of use in horses.
- The additive was evaluated for its irritant properties to skin and eyes, and it was concluded that it does not cause irritation.
- However, the panel could not draw a conclusion on whether the extract could cause dermal and respiratory sensitisation due to the lack of data.
Environmental Impact
- The Panel assessed the potential environmental impact of using the olibanum extract as an additive in horse feed.
- They found that its usage under the proposed conditions was not expected to pose a risk for the environment.
Function and Efficacy
- Species from Boswellia serrata and their preparations were recognised to flavor food.
- The Panel agreed that the function of this extract in animal feed would be essentially the same as that in food.
- Given this similarity of function, the Panel concluded that no further demonstration of efficacy was needed in terms of enhancing the flavor of animal feed.
