Seminal vesiculitis as a cause of signs of colic in a stallion.
Abstract: A 5-year-old stallion was referred because of signs of abdominal pain. During the initial examination, signs of pain were elicited when the right seminal vesicle was palpated per rectum. Signs of pain were also elicited during sexual arousal and attempts at semen collection. The right seminal vesicle was subsequently determined to be abnormal by ultrasonographic and endoscopic examination. The stallion was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for 6 weeks. Five months later, there had been no recurrence of the condition.

The research discusses a case where a 5-year-old stallion showed signs of colic due to an infection in its seminal vesicle, which was treated successfully with a course of antibiotics.
Initial Findings
- The study opens with a case of a 5-year-old stallion presenting with symptoms of abdominal pain. Reason for this was initially unconfirmed, warranting further investigation.
- The stallion showed clear signs of discomfort when the right seminal vesicle was manually examined, indicating the possible area of concern.
- The discomfort was also observed during periods of sexual arousal and semen collection attempts, further suggesting that the issue was localized within the reproductive system.
Ultrasonographic and Endoscopic Examination
- A more detailed investigation was carried out of the right seminal vesicle. By using advanced imaging techniques, such as ultrasonography and endoscopy, the vesicle was found to be abnormal.
- Though the paper does not detail the specific abnormalities found, it suggests that the seminal vesicle was most likely inflamed or infected, causing these symptoms.
Treatment and Outcome
- Upon confirming seminal vesiculitis, or infection of the seminal vesicle, the stallion was treated with a combination antibiotic, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, for a period of six weeks.
- The treatment proved to be successful, and five months after the conclusion of the antibiotic course, there was no indication of a recurrence of the infection.
Significance of the Study
- This case study highlights that seminal vesiculitis can be a cause of colic or abdominal pain in stallions.
- It emphasizes the importance of thorough veterinary examinations, including rectal palpation and imaging, for correctly diagnosing colic symptoms in horses.
- It also demonstrates successful treatment of the condition with a course of antibiotics, indicating a straightforward and effective method of dealing with this particular problem.
