Serologic evidence of West Nile virus infection in horses, Coahuila State, Mexico.
Abstract: Serum samples were obtained from 24 horses in the State of Coahuila, Mexico, in December 2002. Antibodies to West Nile virus were detected by epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by plaque reduction neutralization test in 15 (62.5%) horses. We report the first West Nile virus activity in northern Mexico.

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research article focuses on the discovery of West Nile virus activity in horses from the Northern Mexican state of Coahuila, which is reported for the first time. Antibodies connected to the West Nile virus were identified in over sixty-percent of the tested samples.
Summary of Research Methods
- The research was conducted on serum samples from 24 horses located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico.
- The samples were collected in December 2002, indicating the timing of the study.
- The researchers utilized two specific methods to identify the presence of West Nile virus – the epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and the plaque reduction neutralization test.
Findings of the Study
- The study identified antibodies to the West Nile virus in 15 out of 24 horses, which equates to 62.5% of the total samples.
- This marks the first report of West Nile virus activity in northern Mexico.
Implications of the Study
- Detection of West Nile virus in this region indicates an expansion of the virus’ geographical range.
- Knowing the spread of the virus can assist in the development of strategies to prevent further infections and manage existing ones.
- Identifying the presence of the virus in horses can also lead to greater awareness of potential risks to other mammals, including humans.
