Abstract: Housing horses in stalls restricts natural roaming behaviors, which in turn increases stress and stereotypic behaviors. Daily turnout for voluntary exercise is common for stress mitigation, but there is no consensus for optimal duration of turnout sessions. Objective: We sought to understand how minimal and moderate-duration daily turnout affects behavioral and physiological stress indicators. Methods: In a Latin-square design, adult Quarter horses (N=11) were allowed 0, 15, or 60 minutes/day of solitary turnout for 12-day periods. In-stall behaviors and 24-hour time budgets were assessed on day 6 of each period. Heart rate variability during and after turnout was measured daily. Complete blood counts were performed on days 2, 4, and 12, and TNFα, IL6, insulin, and glucose were assessed on day 2. Results: Heart rate variability metrics indicative of vagal parasympathetic tone (i.e., NN, pNN, LF/HF power) were greater (P<0.05) when horses received 60-minute turnout compared to 0 or 15 minutes, reflecting less physiological stress. Circulating lymphocytes and plasma IL-6 concentrations were less (P<0.05) when horses received 60-minute compared to 15-minute turnout, indicating lower immune stress. Horses receiving 60-minute turnout tended to exhibit less (P<0.10) in-stall locomotive movement on day 6, although stereotypic and aggressive behaviors did not differ among turnout regimens. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that regular turnout of moderate duration reduced physiological and behavioral stress indicators in stall-housed horses. However, regular turnout of minimal duration resulted in minimal improvement. This highlights the importance of prioritizing adequate turnout to support the welfare of horses housed in stalls.
