Staphylectomy for treatment of dorsal displacement of the soft palate in two foals.
Abstract: Dorsal displacement of the soft palate associated with dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia was diagnosed in 2 young foals. The displacement appeared to be congenital. Clinical signs associated with the condition were resolved after staphylectomy. Dorsal displacement of the soft palate is usually recognized in adult animals as an upper respiratory tract disease, but may be a contributing factor to dysphagia and lower respiratory tract disease in young animals.

This research article discusses a study on two foals (young horses) who were diagnosed with dorsal displacement of the soft palate, a condition that seemed to be congenital in these cases. The foals had dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) and aspiration pneumonia (a kind of lung infection) as related symptoms. The study reports that the treatment method, staphylectomy, successfully resolved the related symptoms in these two foals.
Background
- The study started with the diagnosis of dorsal displacement of the soft palate in two foals. Dorsal displacement of the soft palate is a condition where the soft part of the roof of the mouth, which typically blocks food and air from going down the windpipe, shifts to the improper location. This displacement is generally seen as an upper respiratory tract disease in adult animals.
- In these particular cases, the condition seemed to be congenital, meaning the foals were born with it. This led to dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia in the foals.
Treatment and Results
- The researcher decided to use a surgical treatment method called staphylectomy. In this process, part of the soft palate is removed to prevent displacement and related issues.
- After the surgical treatment, the clinical signs associated with the condition such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and aspiration pneumonia (lung infection from food particles or liquids) were resolved in these foals. This suggests that the treatment was successful in dealing with the condition.
Significance of the Study
- This study adds to the veterinary science literature by highlighting that dorsal displacement of the soft palate, commonly recognised as an adult animal condition, can also occur in young animals, and can contribute to lower respiratory tract diseases.
- Further, it brings to light a successful treatment method for this condition in young animals. The successful resolution of symptoms in both the foals suggests that staphylectomy could be an effective treatment method for dorsal displacement of the soft palate, particularly in foals.
