Survey of rider and horse size proportions and associated rider perceptions.

Abstract: The influence of a rider's size on equine performance and welfare remains a topic of debate in the equestrian industry. Most previous research has examined the weight ratios of riders and horses in controlled experimental settings, and the existing perceptions of acceptable rider-horse unit proportions have not been investigated. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate horse and rider size and skill proportions among Finnish horses and riders. The study also investigated riders' perceptions of the acceptability of these size proportions. Methods: Riders over 18 years of age were invited to complete a web-based survey on their own signalment and body measurements and those of their horses. The survey also contained questions on the usage of the horse, saddle fit for both the horse and rider, and the rider's perceptions of suitable rider-horse unit proportions. The survey was advertised on social media, and respondents were self-selecting. Results: Altogether 134 valid responses were obtained. The mean rider-horse unit's body-weight ratio (BWR) was 12.9% (±3.0%), and suitable mean BWR was considered 12.1% (±2.4%). The respondents generally regarded themselves as being a suitable size for their horses. Less experienced riders perceived themselves more often as too heavy, whereas more proficient riders generally considered their weight suitable for their horse. Conclusions: The mean BWR of Finnish rider-horse units seems to be lower than the commonly cited maximum of 20%. Riders generally consider their weight and height to be suitable for their horses.
