Syringomyelia in a thoroughbred foal.
Abstract: The report describes a case of myelodysplasia involing spinal cord segments C7 to T8 of a 5 month old part-Thoroughbred foal. There was a single extensive syringomyelic and hydromyelic cavity which extended from the seventh cervical segment (C7), to the seventh thoracic segment (T7), abnormal size and shape of central canal, and disorderly differentiation of the grey and white matter. The cause of the defect is unknown.

This study focuses on the rare appearance of syringomyelia, a neurologic disorder characterized by cysts and cavities within the spinal cord, in a 5-month old part-Thoroughbred foal. The cause behind the disorder remains undetermined.
Case Presentation
- In the center of this case report is a 5-month old part-Thoroughbred foal diagnosed with syringomyelia. The foal exhibited signs of myelodysplasia, a condition in which the body has difficulty differentiating and forming certain types of cells properly. In this instance, disorderly differentiation was evident in the foal’s spinal cord grey and white matter, elements that play crucial roles in the transmission of neural signals.
- It’s worth noting that the segmented affected by myelodysplasia ranged from the seventh cervical segment (C7) to the eighth thoracic segment (T8), indicating the extent of the observed spinal cord abnormality.
Syringomyelia and Hydromyelia Description
- Syringomyelia and hydromyelia were also diagnosed in this foal. These conditions are characterized by the presence of fluid-filled cavities within the spinal cord and an abnormal central canal size and shape, respectively. In this clinical instance, one large syringomyelic and hydromyelic cavity stretching from C7 to T7 was detailed, demonstrating the extent of the spinal cord’s structural abnormality.
The Unknown Causality
- Despite going through detailed study, the precise cause behind the spinal cord defect in this foal remained undetermined. Understanding the etiology or causative agent behind such conditions is significant as it aids in forming appropriate treatment plans and potentially provides insights for prevention in the future.
Significance of the Report
- This case report shines a light on rare neurological disorders like syringomyelia in very young horses, in this case, a foal. Such studies despite their unusual subject, contribute to the broad spectrum of veterinary medicine, providing valuable input that enhances what we know about mammalian neurology and can potentially guide more successful treatment and management strategies in the future.
