The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Eimeria leuckarti (Eimeriidae, Coccidia, Apicomplexa) infecting domestic horses (Equus ferus caballus).

Abstract: The complete mitochondrial genome of (Eimeriidae, Coccidia, Apicomplexa) was obtained. This morphologically distinctive coccidium is considered to be the only valid species of equids and it infects a range of both domestic and wild horses and their relatives. Despite the distinctive appearance of the oocysts of , the mitochondrial genome organization and gene contents were comparable to other spp. and related eimeriid coccidia infecting a range of mammals and birds. The greatly reduced 6242 bp genome is circular-mapping and contains three protein-coding genes (COI, COIII, CytB), 18 fragments encoding the large subunit rRNA (LSU), and 13 fragments encoding the small subunit (SSU) rRNA. No tRNA was encoded similar to other Apicomplexa. A Bayesian inference tree based on aligned CDS and rDNA fragments from and 34 other coccidia demonstrated that this mt genome has close phylogenetic affinities to and species, and related eimeriid coccidia.

The study provides insights into the entire mitochondrial genome sequence of Eimeria leuckarti, a parasite species that infects domestic and wild horses. The mitochondrial genome organization and gene content of this species, despite its distinctive morphological appearance, are similar to other associated species infecting different mammalian and bird hosts.

Understanding the Mitochondrial Genome of Eimeria leuckarti

  • The research is focused on uncovering the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of a specific type of coccidium, Eimeria leuckarti. This parasite holds a unique morphological difference but genetically, it exhibits similarity with other species from the Eimeriidae family.
  • Parallel to its distinctive appearance, the Eimeria leuckarti is categorized as the only valid species of equids, capable of infecting a range of both domestic and wild horses and their relatives.
  • The mitochondrial genome organization and the gene content of Eimeria leuckarti, despite its unique morphology, are similar to other kinds of Eimeriidae and related eimeriid coccidia infecting a range of mammals and birds.

Eimeria leuckarti’s Mitochondrial Genome Composition

  • The mitochondrial genome of Eimeria leuckarti is notably reduced, at 6242 bp and possesses a circular-mapping feature.
  • The genome contains three protein-coding genes (COI, COIII, CytB) and fragments encoding large subunit rRNA (LSU) and small subunit rRNA (SSU).
  • The research did not discover any tRNA encoded in the genome, a characteristic shared with other species from the Apicomplexa classification.

Phylogenetic Affinities of Eimeria leuckarti

  • An inference tree based on Bayesian processing reveals that the mitochondrial genome of Eimeria leuckarti bears close phylogenetic ties with other coccidia species, demonstrating a shared ancestry or relative aspect with these other species.
  • This analysis was carried out by aligning CDS and rDNA fragments from Eimeria leuckarti and 34 other coccidia species. This identification of shared phylogenetic affinities indicates an evolutionary link and corroborates the genetic similarities among these species despite distinct morphological differences.
