The effect of pregnancy and foaling on intravaginal pressure in pony mares.

Abstract: Pressures were recorded monthly at two sites in the vagina of each of five pregnant and five nonpregnant pony mares; pressures in five mares were also recorded weekly after foaling. The developing pregnancy did not influence pressure, and after foaling the integrity of the seal formed by the caudal reproductive tract was rapidly restored.

The research investigates if pregnancy and foaling have influence on the intravaginal pressures in pony mares. The results show that these factors do not affect the pressure and the reproductive tract’s sealing restores quickly after foaling.

Research Objective and Methods

  • This study aimed to discover whether pregnancy and post-foaling conditions have any notable impact on intravaginal pressures in pony mares, specifically at two different vaginal site.
  • To gather the necessary data, researchers examined a total of ten pony mares, five of which were pregnant while the others were not. Pressures in the vaginas of these mares were recorded on a monthly basis at two distinct vaginal sites.
  • In addition to this, pressures were also recorded on a weekly basis in five mares post-foaling.

Findings of the Research

  • Despite the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and post-foaling process, there appeared to be no influence on the intravaginal pressure.
  • One may assume that the growing fetus could potentially increase the pressure on the vaginal canal; however, the findings indicate that the pregnancy does not influence this pressure.
  • Post-foaling, the integrity of the seal formed at the tail end of the reproductive tract was found to be quickly restored. This suggest that the reproductive tract has an ability to rapidly recover its integrity following childbirth.

Implications of the Study

  • This research provides valuable insights into the resilience and capabilities of the pony mare’s reproductive system, particularly during and after the pregnancy phase.
  • The findings may have significant implications for horse breeding practices and veterinary healthcare, as it suggests that the pressures in mare reproductive system remains constant during pregnancy and after foaling. This stability can be beneficial for the maintenance of equine health and the success of breeding programs.
