[The horse as an athlete: an animal model of choice for sports medicine: sonographic studies of joint disorders].
Abstract: Equine diagnostic sonography was initially used for the diagnosis and documentation of tendon injuries. Since 1990, this technique, along with radiography, has become an indispensable imaging procedure for the diagnosis of equine joint injuries. Sonography provides precise diagnostic information on the synovial membrane and fluid, the articular cartilage, subchondral bone and joint margins, the ligaments and menisci, and the anatomical structures involved in periarticular swelling or enlargement. Improvements in ultrasound machines and better superficial and deep image resolution allow us to examine every joint of the frontlimbs and hindlimbs, including the most proximal, as well as most of the joints of the equine vertebral column, pelvis and head. As a professional athlete, the horse is an excellent animal model of sport-related joint disorders in humans. The large size of its anatomical structures facilitates high-quality imaging. Sensitive and specific diagnostic sonography of joint injuries requires strict standardization of the technical approach to each joint structure and also a precise knowledge of equine joint anatomy.

The research paper is focused on the use of diagnostic sonography in the analysis of sport-related joint disorders in horses, and how this technique can be applied as a model for humans.
Utilization of Diagnostic Sonography
- The paper starts by highlighting the initial use of equine diagnostic sonography for detecting and documenting tendon injuries.
- Since the 1990s, alongside radiography, sonography has been integrated as a crucial evaluation tool for detecting joint injuries in horses.
Benefits of Sonography
- Sonography gives detailed diagnostic information about various aspects of a horse’s joint such as the synovial membrane and fluid, the articular cartilage, subchondral bone and joint margins, the ligaments and menisci, and any structures involved in periarticular swelling or enlargement.
- Advancements in ultrasound machines coupled with better image resolution, both superficial and deep, has lent to the examination of every joint in both the frontlimbs and hindlimbs in horses.
- This includes the ability to examine most joints in the horse’s vertebral column, pelvis, and head as well.
Horses as Ideal Models for Sport-Related Joint Disorders
- The paper puts forth the premise that due to horses being professional athletes themselves, they serve as an excellent animal model for studying sport-related joint disorders in humans.
- The larger size of horse anatomy facilitates high-quality imaging, making sonography highly affective.
Standard Requirements for Diagnostic Sonography
- However, for sensitive and specific diagnostic sonography of joint injuries, the paper underlines the need for strict standardization of the technical approach to each joint structure.
- Additionally, precise knowledge of equine joint anatomy is crucial for accurate sonographic diagnoses.
