The relationship between dialy sperm production as determined by quantitative testicular histology and daily sperm output in the stallion.

Abstract: The relationship between daily sperm productions (DSP) and daily sperm output (DSO) was determined in eleven stallions. The DSO was determined by collecting single ejaculates, with an artificial vagina, at 24-hr intervals. The stallions were killed 24 hr after the last collection and the DSP was determined by quantitative testicular histology. The mean DSP was 8-0 X 10(9) (S.E. +/- 0-4 X 10(9), and the mean DSO was 7-0 X 10(9) (S.E. +/- 0-4 X 10(9)). It was estimated that 87% of the spermatozoa produced by the testes were harvested. The correlation between DSP and DSO was 0-80 (P less than 0-01), and between DSP and testis weight was 0-77 (P less than 0-01).

This study investigates the correlation between daily sperm production (understood by examining testicular tissue) and actual daily sperm output in stallions, concluding that there is indeed a strong correlation between the two and that 87% of the sperm generated are collected in the daily output.

Research Methodology

  • The study involved 11 stallions and examined the correlation between daily sperm production (DSP) and daily sperm output (DSO).
  • Daily sperm outputs were calculated by collecting ejaculates from the stallions every 24 hours using an artificial vagina.
  • 24 hours after the last collection, the horses were euthanized and the scientists assessed the DSP via an analysis of their testicular tissue.

Findings

  • On average, DSP was calculated as 8.0 x 109 with a standard error (S.E.) of +/- 0.4 x 109.
  • The average DSO was 7.0 x 109, also with S.E. of +/- 0.4 x 109.
  • The study found that 87% of all spermatozoa generated by the stallions’ testes were collected in the DSO, illustrating a high recovery rate.

Correlations and Significance

  • The researchers found a strong correlation of 0.80 between DSP and DSO, significant at the level of P less than 0.01.
  • There was also a strong correlation between DSP and testis weight (0.77), also with significance at the P less than 0.01 level.
  • These findings indicate that both DSP and testis weight significantly relate to the DSO, giving credence to the methods used for calculation and extraction.
