Treatment of progressive ethmoidal haematoma using intralesional injections of formalin in three horses.
Abstract: Three Thoroughbred horses with unilateral progressive ethmoid haematomas were treated using intralesional injections of 10% formalin (4% formaldehyde solution). Injections were performed in the standing sedated horse through the nasal passages under endoscopic guidance and, when the ethmoid haematoma involved the paranasal sinuses, through holes trephined into the affected sinus. Regression of the lesions occurred in all cases after repeated injections. This technique appears to be a safe and effective treatment for progressive ethmoid haematomas in the horse.

The study explores the use of intralesional injections of formalin as a treatment method for progressive ethmoidal haematomas in horses. The researchers found that this treatment led to regression of the lesions in all three horses, indicating its potential effectiveness.
Research Objective and Methodology
- The researchers aimed to investigate if intralesional 10% formalin injections, a 4% formaldehyde solution, could be an effective treatment for progressive uncontrolled growths or ethmoid haematomas in horses.
- Three Thoroughbred horses, all experiencing unilateral (one-sided) progressive ethmoid haematomas, were chosen for the study.
- The treatment was administered while the horses were standing and sedated. Injections were guided endoscopically through the nasal passages and, where necessary due to the extension of the haematoma into the paranasal sinuses, through holes trephined into the affected sinus.
Research Findings
- The study found that all three horses experienced regression of the lesions after undergoing repeated injections of formalin. This indicates that the treatment was successful in reducing the haematomas.
- The procedure, as conducted in the study, was determined to be both safe and effective. There were no mentions of adverse side effects or health implications in the short term.
Implications of the Research
- The findings of this study suggest that intralesional injections of formalin could potentially be an effective method to treat progressive ethmoid haematomas in horses.
- This could offer a new approach to treatment, especially in cases where the haematoma has extended into the paranasal sinuses.
- Further research may be needed to confirm these findings, explore long-term effects and potential risks, and determine the optimal frequency and dosage of the injections for different sizes and stages of ethmoid haematomas.
