Two- and three-dimensional anatomy of paranasal sinuses in Arabian foals.

Abstract: The 2- and 3-dimensional (3D) anatomy and the morphometric properties of the paranasal sinuses of the foal have received little or no attention in the literature. The aim of this study was to obtain details of the paranasal sinuses using multiplane CT imaging to create 3D models and to determine morphological and morphometric data for the sinuses using the 3D models. The heads of five female foals were used in this study. The heads were scanned using computed tomography (CT) in the rostrocaudal direction. After the heads had been frozen, anatomical sections were obtained in the scan position. The 3D models of sinuses and the skull were prepared using MIMICS(®). These models were used to assess the surface area and volume of the sinuses, the width, height and orientation of the apertures connecting these sinuses and finally the planar relation of the sinuses with the skull. The right and left sides of all anatomical structures, except the sphenoid sinuses, had symmetric organization on CT images and anatomical sections. The total sinus surface area and volume on both sides were 214.4 cm(2) and 72.9 ml, respectively. The largest and the smallest sinuses were the frontal sinus (41.5 ml) and the middle conchal sinus (0.2 ml), respectively. It was found that the planes bounding the sinuses passed through easily palpable points on the head. In conclusion, 3D modeling in combination with conventional sectional imaging of the paranasal sinuses of the foal may help anatomists, radiologists, clinicians and veterinary students.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article is about investigating the paranasal sinuses’ anatomy in Arabian foals, both two- and three-dimensionally, using computed tomography and 3D modeling. The findings aim to help anatomists, radiologists, clinicians, and veterinary students better understand and approach these sinuses.

Objectives and Methodology of the Research

  • This study aimed to learn more about the paranasal sinuses’ anatomy of the Arabian foals, areas which have not been extensively researched.
  • Researchers used multiplane computed tomography (CT) imaging of five female foals’ heads to create three-dimensional (3D) models.
  • Necessary morphological and morphometric data were collected by studying these 3D models.
  • After scanning, the subjects’ heads were frozen to get anatomical sections paralleling the scan orientation.
  • 3D sinus models and the skull were created using MIMICS® software.

Analysis and Findings

  • Researchers used 3D models to examine the surface area, volume of the sinuses, and the orientation, width, and height of the apertures linking these sinuses.
  • Comparison were made between these aspects and the planar relationship of the sinuses with the skull.
  • It was observed in the CT images and anatomical sections that all anatomical structures showed symmetric organization on both the left and right sides, except for the sphenoid sinuses.
  • Researchers calculated the total sinus surface area and volume on both sides to be approximately 214.4 cm2 and 72.9 ml, respectively.
  • Among the sinuses, the largest was the frontal sinus (41.5 ml), and the smallest was the middle conchal sinus (0.2 ml).
  • It was noticeable that the planes bordering the sinuses passed through points on the head that could be palpated easily.

Conclusion

  • The blend of conventional sectional imaging and 3D modeling provides a better understanding of the foal’s paranasal sinuses.
  • The collective data and models could aid anatomists, radiologists, clinicians, and veterinary students in their work and studies.
