Ulcerative colitis and protein losing enteropathy associated with intestinal salmonellosis and histoplasmosis in a horse.
Abstract: Ulcerative colitis, protein losing enteropathy and intestinal histoplasmosis-salmonellosis were diagnosed in a six-year-old Quarterhorse stallion. For six months before examination, the horse experienced a slow continual loss of weight. During the 17 day period of hospitalisation the horse developed progressive generalised oedema. On the 12th day of hospitalisation a severe profuse watery diarrhoea began; the horse was killed five days later.

This research article details a case where a horse developed ulcerative colitis, protein-losing enteropathy, and intestinal complications due to salmonella and histoplasmosis infections.
Overview of the Case
- The subject of the study was a six-year-old Quarterhorse stallion, which had been losing weight slowly over a period of six months.
- Throughout the animal’s 17-day hospitalization period, it developed generalized edema (an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissues).
- On the twelfth day of the hospital stay, the horse started to experience severe, profuse watery diarrhea. The horse was euthanized five days later.
Diagnoses
- The horse was diagnosed with several interrelated conditions, all of which contributed to its deteriorating health status.
- Ulcerative colitis: This is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract. In horses, it usually results in weight loss, diarrhea, and severe discomfort.
- Protein-losing enteropathy: This condition is characterized by the abnormal loss of proteins from the digestive tract or the inability of the digestive tract to absorb proteins. It can lead to malnourishment, weight loss, and fluid accumulation in the tissues.
- Intestinal salmonella and histoplasmosis infection: Salmonellosis and histoplasmosis are serious infections caused by bacteria and fungi respectively. Both infections can severely affect the gastrointestinal system, leading to symptoms like severe diarrhea.
Study Significance
- This case sheds light on the complex overlapping health issues that can develop in horses, particularly those relating to gastrointestinal diseases and infections.
- It highlights the importance of prompt and comprehensive diagnosis for effective treatment, considering how the horse’s condition continuously deteriorated during the hospitalization period.
- The study also sparks conversations about animal welfare and the need for appropriate and timely interventions in case of severe health crises.
