Ultrasound-guided biopsy as a diagnostic aid in three horses with a cranial mediastinal lymphosarcoma.

Abstract: An ultrasound examination of the thorax of three horses which were performing poorly or had mild signs of colic showed that they had a cranial mediastinal mass and a pleural effusion. A cytological examination of the pleural fluid showed that it did not contain neoplastic cells. A histological examination of an ultrasound-guided core biopsy of the cranial mediastinal mass showed that in each of the three horses it was a lymphosarcoma.

The research article discusses the use of ultrasound-guided biopsy to diagnose cranial mediastinal lymphosarcoma, a type of cancer, in three horses displaying mild signs of illness.

Ultrasound Examination

  • The study begins by detailing the initial examination of three horses exhibiting signs of poor performance or mild colic symptoms.
  • Each horse underwent an ultrasound examination of the thorax, during which abnormalities were identified. Specifically, each horse was found to have a cranial mediastinal mass and pleural effusion, indicating the possibility of a serious health condition.

Cytological Examination

  • Following the ultrasound, a cytological examination, which studies the structure and function of cells, of the accumulated pleural fluid was performed.
  • Interestingly, this examination found that the fluid did not contain neoplastic cells, which are indicative of a cancerous tumor. This initially indicated the absence of cancer.

Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsy

  • Despite the lack of neoplastic cells in the pleural fluid, the presence of the cranial mediastinal mass led researchers to perform a more invasive diagnostic procedure: an ultrasound-guided core biopsy.
  • This procedure involves using ultrasound imaging to guide a needle into a specific area of the body, in this case, the cranial mediastinal mass, for sampling and testing.
  • A histological examination, the study of tissues under a microscope, was conducted on the tissue samples obtained from the biopsy.
  • This examination revealed that all three horses were actually suffering from lymphosarcoma, a form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

Conclusion

  • The findings of this study emphasize the value of ultrasound-guided biopsies in veterinary diagnostic procedures.
  • Even though the cytological examination did not reveal the presence of cancer, the ultrasound-guided biopsy was capable of providing a definitive diagnosis, showcasing the necessity for multiple diagnostic procedures in complex cases.
