Use of esophagoscopy in the diagnosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in a horse.
Abstract: Esophagoscopy allowed visualization and biopsy of a lesion within a diverticulum of the esophagus in an adult horse. Although the biopsy specimen obtained was small, diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma was possible from histologic examination of the esophageal tissue sample retrieved by use of endoscopy.

This study involves the use of esophagoscopy, a diagnostic tool, to identify a form of cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma in the esophagus of a horse. Even though the sample collected through this process was minimal, it was adequate to enable a diagnosis through the examination of the tissue sample.
Understanding Esophagoscopy
- Esophagoscopy is a procedure used to visualize the esophagus, allowing for the identification of issues that might otherwise remain undetected. This involves the insertion of a tube with a camera (esophagoscope) into the esophagus.
- In the context of this study, esophagoscopy was used to visualize and biopsy a lesion noted within a diverticulum in the esophagus of an adult horse.
Identifying Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma is a common type of cancer that can occur in different parts of the body, including the esophagus. A biopsy, which is the removal of tissue for examination under a microscope, is often necessary for its identification.
- Despite the biopsy sample from the lesion being small, it was sufficient to enable a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma.
- The diagnosis was made possible through a process known as histologic examination. This involves the detailed microscopic study of the tissue to identify signs of disease. In this case, the histologic examination of the esophageal tissue happened using an endoscopy procedure.
The Value of this Study
- This study highlights the practical use of esophagoscopy in equine medicine, notably in the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in the esophagus.
- The authors demonstrate that even minor tissue samples retrieved through endoscopy can bear significant histological and diagnosis details.
- This research contributes valuable insights into the diagnostic potential of esophagoscopy and its applicability in various veterinary scenarios. It validates the practice of utilizing this procedure in instances where a lesion is present, concurring that the benefits of obtaining a biopsy for histologic examination can outweigh the risks and challenges.
