Varices with thrombosis in the cervix and uterus of a mare.
Abstract: Cervical and uterine varices with thrombosis were observed at the necropsy of a virgin 16-year-old Peruvian Paso that had previous episodes of hemorrhage from the uterus. Practitioners and pathologists should be alert to the possibility of ruptured varices in mares with hemorrhage into the uterus or from the vulva.

The study discusses the unexpected discovery of cervical and uterine varices with thrombosis in a horse that had experienced previous uterine hemorrhages.
Background
- The research focused on the necropsy, i.e., the post-mortem examination of a 16-year-old Peruvian Paso mare, a horse that had not given birth and had a history of uterine hemorrhages.
Findings
- During the necropsy, the scientists identified varices with thrombosis in the cervix and uterus of the horse. ‘Varices’ refers to abnormally swollen or dilated blood vessels, while ‘thrombosis’ entails the formation of blood clots in the blood vessels.
Implications
- The research team suggests veterinarians and animal pathologists should consider the potential for the presence of ruptured varices in mares or female horses that present with hemorrhage into the uterus or bleeding from the vulva, as these could indicate undiagnosed varices within the reproductive system.
Importance
- This study provides significant insights into intrareproductive issues in horses, expanding knowledge in veterinary science, and contributing to improved horse healthcare.
- It is also crucial in raising diagnostic awareness among veterinarians regarding the potential presence of varices in cases of uterine hemorrhages in horses.
