World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (W.A.A.V.P.) methods for the detection of anthelmintic resistance in nematodes of veterinary importance.

Abstract: Methods have been described to assist in the detection of anthelmintic resistance in strongylid nematodes of ruminants, horses and pigs. Two tests are recommended, an in vivo test, the faecal egg count reduction test for use in infected animals, and an in vitro test, the egg hatch test for detection of benzimidazole resistance in nematodes that hatch shortly after embryonation. Anaerobic storage for submission of faecal samples from the field for use in the in vitro test is of value and the procedure is described. The tests should enable comparable data to be obtained in surveys in all parts of the world.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research addresses two tests for detecting anthelmintic resistance in strongylid nematodes found in pigs, horses, and ruminants. One test is direct with the use of infected animals, while the second is conducted in a lab, specifically focusing on benzimidazole resistance in nematodes. The results from these tests are expected to provide consistent data across all global surveys.

Objective of the Research

  • The objective of this research was to define methods for detecting resistance in nematodes to anthelmintic drugs. This resistance poses a significant issue in veterinary parasitology as it hampers the effective treatment of parasitic infections in livestock animals.

Two Recommended Tests

  • The first test, known as the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), is an in vivo method conducted on infected animals. By monitoring the drop in egg count in the feces of treated animals, researchers can indirectly assess whether the used drug is effective against the prevalent nematodes within the organism.
  • The second test is an in vitro method, the egg hatch test. It’s specially designed to detect resistance to benzimidazole, a common anthelmintic drug, in nematodes that hatch shortly after embryonation. Through this method, the researchers can diagnose the degree of resistance even in the early stages of the parasite’s development.

Value of Anaerobic Storage

  • The article highlights the importance of anaerobic storage when handling faecal samples from the field. Proper storage under anaerobic conditions can help maintain the condition of the eggs in the sample, which is essential for the subsequent in vitro test.

Overall Benefit of These Tests

  • The successful establishment of these tests would provide a universally usable method for surveying nematode resistance to anthelmintics. The information gathered from these tests could be compared across all parts of the world, thereby providing valuable insights into the global patterns of anthelmintic resistance. This would also facilitate a more effective control and treatment of nematode infections in livestock.
