Feeding raw soybeans to horses is not recommended. Whole raw soybeans contain anti-nutritive factors which are degraded when they are heated.

Raw soybeans should not be fed to horses as they contain anti-nutritive factors. Consumption of raw soybean can inhibit the enzyme trypsin which is important for protein digestion.

Heating the soybeans, such as by roasting, will cause these anti-nutritive factors to be denatured so that protein digestion is no longer negatively impacted.

Processed soybean meal, soybean flour, roasted soybeans, steamed soybean flakes, or extruded whole soybeans are appropriate alternatives.

Soybean meal is the most common form fed to horses, utilized for its high protein content and high fat content. Soybeans also have a beneficial profile of amino acids, providing lysine which is commonly deficient in the equine diet.

Soybean oil is also used to add caloric energy to the equine diet.
