Cereal Straw

Cereal straw is the fibrous residue remaining after cereal grains—such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye—have been harvested. It primarily consists of the dry stalks and structural parts of the cereal plant. Typically processed into bales or chopped forms, cereal straw retains the physical characteristics of the plant, characterized by high fiber content and low nutrient density relative to the grain.

In equine nutrition, it is incorporated into feed formulations as a source of structural fiber. Due to its low energy content, cereal straw is used to add bulk to the diet and promote chewing activity. It is typically combined with more nutrient-dense forages—such as hay or pasture—to balance the overall nutrient profile and manage energy intake in horses requiring a controlled diet.

In equine management, cereal straw is primarily used as bedding material. Its consistent structural attributes make it a practical choice for providing a natural, absorbent substrate in stables, enhancing comfort and contributing to a well-managed stable environment.
